Distinguished Alumna Reminds Students "Why We're Here"
Staff and students poured over Lisa Lis’ old yearbooks this week when the Class of 1974 graduate came to school to talk to the seventh and eighth graders about her years at Hillel and subsequent career and activities. As one of this year’s Distinguished Alumni awardees, Lis was happy to return to the school that “planted a seed” that would blossom into a passionate love of Judaism and Israel.
“Hillel led me to Israel, where I met my soldier-husband, Hannan, and then we returned to Detroit to raise our four children, all of whom have strong Israeli names, and all of whom graduated from Hillel,” she said. Now a grandmother, Mrs. Lis said she looked forward to her granddaughter attending Hillel. She also told students about her work at Weight Watchers, and her deep involvement in the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
After she reminisced about the little red school house and the former gymnasium, she left students with a charge: “We’re on earth for two reasons: to enjoy its splendors – family, friends, and nature. We’re also here to make the world a better place for the next generation. It’s our responsibility as Jews,” she said.
Lis, along with Hy Safran (Class of 1998) and Dr. Charles Schwartz (Class of 1983), will receive the Distinguished Alumni Awards on Sunday, May 17, at the Annual Dream Maker Dinner.
